Province Helps Seed Potatoes Take Root

The company, which has been operating since 1997, currently employs 25 full- and part-time seasonal workers to supply seed potatoes to the potato grower industry for regional and export markets. The province is investing $250,000 in S&J to upgrade equipment and ensure the operation remains competitive. The loan will enable the company to take advantage of opportunities to expand its markets. “We appreciate the support of the province,” said Steve Ellis, president of S&J Potato Farms Inc. “This loan will allow us to increase our efficiencies and grow the business.” The company manages 2,500 acres in the Amherst Shore area, where it rotates 750 acres of seed potatoes in a three-year rotation with grain and hay. -30-last_img
