BiondoText description provided by the architects. With the living spaces located directly above the sleeping spaces, this residence transcends the conventional planning and construction of the traditional cottage architecture that exists in the region. As one approaches the site, the initial image is that of restrained elegance. The presence of shimmering metal roofs becomes analogous to that of the lake while subtly-carved façade provides a glimpse through the house to the lake beyond.  Save this picture!Courtesy of joseph n. biondoRecommended ProductsPorcelain StonewareGrespaniaPorcelain Tiles – Icon BricksRailing / BalustradesC.R. The roof appears to hover, while the masonry volumes become an organizing element with sufficient size, closure, and regularity to serve as a figure that can embrace the other layers being organized within. The flanking reinforced masonry walls provide sufficient structure and enclosure which enable the main living area to be free of interior walls. The absence of these walls offers uninterrupted views to the lake from every room. The natural progression of the building with its respect to its topography is rhythmic. Save this picture!Courtesy of joseph n. biondoGradationally carved and more delicate, the structure anchors itself differently as the grade falls towards the lake. The heavy masonry walls affix themselves into the earth while the lighter wood-framed, cement panel and glass envelope appears to hover above grade. The roof form, which consists of two opposing sheds, visually floats above the primary living space giving the impression of outdoor pavilions from the lake. Save this picture!planThe choice to use certain materials in this home is driven by aesthetic, functional requirements and largely reflects ties to regional traditions. Our curiosity with materials of modest means is explored in this house. By using ordinary materials we gain the greatest possibility of achieving a renewed reality within the material condition of a building. The concrete masonry unit – nothing can be more elemental, humbler in substance, modest in manufacture and simpler in shape and texture. The concrete block can be married to other material whether natural or man made; wood, metal, glass, cementitious panels. Through rigorous and precise application of these complimentary materials, the status of the concrete block, which is so simple and so ordinary, can be elevated. The materials used are commonplace however, the care of their methods of assembly and absolute passion for scrupulous detailing are not. Meteorologist: Temps Could Drop to Zero on Long Island Friday Night

first_imgSign up for our COVID-19 newsletter to stay up-to-date on the latest coronavirus news throughout New York Nine-year-old Kevin Grix measures and takes the temperature of the snow piled up in front of his North Babylon home on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014. (Photo credit: Tom Grix)Thought the brutal cold you woke up to Friday morning was bad? Well, just wait for Friday evening. The National Weather Service said temperatures across Long Island could drop into the single digits once the sun sets, and perhaps even plummet to zero.David Stark, a meteorologist at the Upton-based weather service, said the nor’easter that blanketed the Island with up to a foot of snow overnight, would continue funneling in some cold air during the day Friday, contributing to already freezing temperatures. The temperature quickly dropped during the height of the storm early Friday morning, but reached sub-zero temperatures because of a nasty wind chill. The wind should die down by Friday evening, and shouldn’t add to the cold, he said.“It’s certainly a bitter dangerous type cold,” Stark said, adding that the frigid, bone-chilling cold brought on by the powerful storm is unusual even for this time of year.Saturday’s forecast calls for a high near 28, and the temperature should remain in the 20s throughout the night.Things will change Sunday with temperatures potentially topping off near 45 degrees—balmy compared to the brutal cold the storm brought in—and should help melt what’s left of the snow. Rain is also forecasted for Sunday. But there’s still another whole day before that happens.Stark’s recommendation: “You want to limit your exposure” to the bitter cold outside.[View the story “Photos of Nor’easter that Slammed Long Island” on Storify]last_img read more

ICC World Cup ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Amidst hostility, India and Pakistan square off in marquee clash

first_img New Delhi: There is tension. There is continuing hostility. The build-up was dominated by calls for a boycott due to the terror attack in Pulwama. Despite all this, the tickets for this match were sold out in minutes. In terms of numbers, the rivalry has been one-sided. However, when it comes to passion, emotion and nationalistic fervour or jingoism, nothing beats India vs Pakistan clash. Indian fans will keep on harking about the 6-0 scoreline against their arch-rivals. For Pakistan, what began as a process of removing the monkey off the back is now a gorilla off the back. With every passing World Cup, the desperation for Pakistan has been palpable. They have only one mission: Defeat India or face more agony. The momentum for both sides heading into this contest is stark. Pakistan squandered a golden chance to get the better of five-time champions Australia. India, on the other hand, is operating like a well-oiled machine in both the batting and bowling. The wash-out in Trent Bridge against New Zealand would not have affected India too much. KL Rahul is an ideal fit at the top in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan while either Vijay Shankar or Dinesh Karthik can add more depth to either the batting or the bowling. However, Pakistan is known to be mercurial and India cannot take them lightly. Mohammad Amir, who ripped out Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final showed that he is back in form with his first five-wicket haul in ODIs. In many ways, Amir is the key to the bowling along with Wahab Riaz, who has proven to be expensive against India in past encounters. For Pakistan to make a contest out of this, their batting needs to fire. Mohammad Hafeez, Imam-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed have made contributions but all eyes would be on Fakhar Zaman, whose century helped Pakistan win their last ICC trophy. In past encounters, Pakistan’s batting has always let them down and they will be hoping for a better show. There is one slight problem heading into the clash in Manchester though. The weather has been inclement in Manchester for the last couple of days and showers are expected to play a part in this match. The billions of fans would be hoping that the rain gods stay away and the ICC will also be praying. If rain washes out this match, then it is certain that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 will be a certified disaster.Team combinationsWith Shikhar Dhawan missing this match, KL Rahul will open the batting. India already has depth in the bowling. Considering his previous record against Pakistan and provided the pitch offers seam movement, Mohammed Shami might replace Bhuvneshwar Kumar. If India needs depth in their batting, they might go in with Dinesh Karthik or Vijay Shankar. For Pakistan, they might want to include Shadab Khan in place of Shaheen Afridi who was a tad expensive against AustraliaIndia (Playing XI): KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra ChahalPakistan (Playing XI): Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfaraz Ahmed(w/c), Shoaib Malik, Asif Ali, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan, Mohammad AmirWho will win?On all departments, India is better equipped and it is no longer a case of India’s batting versus Pakistan’s bowling. Barring a freakish performance from either the Pakistan batsmen or the bowlers, India should make the scoreline 7-0 on Sunday.Weather and pitchThis is the most dominant question of all. The weather in Southampton is not all that great. There are chances of rain and it could end up being another spoiler.Statistics6-0. This is not only a decorated scoreline in tennis but for Indian cricket fans. India has won all six encounters against Pakistan starting from 1992 in Sydney, 1996 in Bangalore, 1999 in Manchester, 2003 in Centurion, 2011 in Mohali and 2015 in Adelaide.Stadium and timingsThe match will be played at Old Trafford, Manchester and the match will begin at 3:00 PM IST. highlights India holds a 6-0 advantage against Pakistan in World Cups.Pakistan last won an ICC event against India in 2017 Champions Trophy.India holds a 3-2 advantage in ICC events against Pakistan in England.center_img For all the Latest Sports News News, ICC World Cup News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps.last_img read more

Serena sweeps Hopman Cup singles ahead of Slam record bid

first_imgHer form was patchy across the three matches, but Williams said the round robin format of the event was ideal preparation for Melbourne.“It was definitely good to play three singles matches here, not to mention the mixed,” she said after her singles match.Williams cruised through the first set against Boulter, but found a more competitive opponent in the second. Not for the first time this week, the frustration of the American grew as Boulter was able to match her for winners, with the Brit claiming an early break in the second game.Williams immediately broke back, but then enjoyed a slice of good fortune when her forehand dropped over the net on a Boulter break point in the fourth game. The set remained on serve until the tie-break, which Williams dominated. In the men’s singles, the struggling Tiafoe led 5-3 in the first set, but won just one more game in losing 7-6 (7/4), 6-0 to Cameron Norrie. The Brits claimed the tie with victory in the mixed doubles.Share on: WhatsApp Perth, Australia | AFP | Serena Williams completed a clean sweep of her singles matches at the mixed teams Hopman Cup in Perth Thursday as she prepares for her bid to make Grand Slam history at the Australian Open. The winner of 23 Slam singles titles, Williams was made to work a little harder than expected by young Brit Katie Boulter in the United States’ final group tie, but prevailed in straight sets to make it three victories from as many outings. However, the 37-year-old’s perfect singles record this week wasn’t enough to keep the USA in contention at what is expected to be the last Hopman Cup, where she has twice been a winner.Williams and Frances Tiafoe were already eliminated after losing their opening two ties.Watched by her daughter Alexis Olympia, Williams’ 6-1, 7-6 (7/2) win over the 97th-ranked Boulter followed victories over former top 10 player Belinda Bencic and Greece’s Maria Sakkari earlier in the week.Currently ranked 16th, Williams needs just one more Grand Slam singles title to equal the record of Australian Margaret Court, but hasn’t won a major since the Australian Open in 2017.She gave birth to her daughter in late 2017 and was beaten in the Wimbledon and US Open finals last year.It was at the latter that she had a major meltdown during her loss to Naomi Osaka. With the Australian Open in Melbourne less than two weeks away, Williams dropped just one set in her singles matches, although at different times she seemed to be troubled by a right shoulder problem and had both ankles strapped.last_img read more

A Friend Denied

first_imgBy Kathy MieleI walked into my son Alex’s room and saw that he was on his computer. “Can I ask you for a favor?” I asked.“Sure,” he said, never taking his eyes off his computer screen. “What is it?”“You know I’ve been saying for years that I’d never go on Facebook?” I began gathering dirty glasses and dishes that were stacked on his desk from the night before.“Yeah?” he looked at me skeptically.“Well, I’ve changed my mind,” I stated a bit sheepishly.Alex closed his laptop and looked directly at me. “Why would you want to go on it now?”“Because so many of my friends are on it and I feel like I’m missing out,” I explained.Alex looked at me for a minute. “If that’s what you want to do, go ahead,” he said but I could hear in his voice that he wasn’t thrilled about the whole idea.“Thanks,” I laughed. “But your permission wasn’t the favor I was looking for.”“What’s the favor then?”“I need your help putting my profile together,” I said. “You know how computer challenged I am!”Alex groaned.“Please!” I cried.“Fine,” he said as he got up to go to my computer.I quickly put his dirty dishes down and followed him into my room. “You’re going to do it for me now?” I asked.“We might as well get this over with.” He sighed as he sat down at my desk.I quickly took out a few pictures I’d tucked into my pocket. “Can you put this one in for my profile picture?” I handed him the first one. “I just need you to crop out the other person in the photo.”He took a quick look. “Sure I can do that.”“Great!” I handed him the next picture. “Can you also put this family photo of us in, too?”Alex looked at the photo of the four of us on our front porch. “Don’t tag me in this.” he said.“Are you serious?” I had to laugh. “I’m asking you to put the whole thing together for me. Do you really think I have any idea how to tag a picture?”Alex shrugged his shoulders. “You have a point there.”Over the next 20 minutes he asked me questions about how I wanted my profile to look. Once he had my pictures in place he pushed himself back from my desk. “You’re all set,” he said as he headed for his own room. “By the way,” he called over his shoulder. “Don’t friend me!”“Are you kidding?”“No, I’m serious.”“But all my friends have their kids as friends,” I whined.Alex stopped in the hallway and looked back at me. “So you’re telling me that if all your friends jumped off a bridge you’d have to too?”I was speechless! I suddenly realized that one of my old sayings that I’d used on both my boys had come back to haunt me! Now I was the one who felt like a little kid.“I didn’t think so.” Alex said as he smiled and headed back to his room.last_img read more

first_imgTRAINER BALTAS INDICATES CAL-BRED FILLY WILL BE POINTED TO GRADE I AMERICAN OAKS MAY 30 ARCADIA, Calif. (May 3, 2015)–Lightly raced Spanish Queen attended the pace, saved ground and accelerated through an opening two paths off the rail turning for home to register an impressive 1 ½ length win under Brice Blanc in Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 Honeymoon Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, covering 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.24.Trained by Richard Baltas, the California-bred daughter of Tribal Rule came off a close second at the distance in the Grade III Providencia Stakes April 4 and got her first stakes win Sunday and her second win from just three starts.“She has a helluva turn of foot,” said Baltas. “Brice made a good move there at the top of the lane. I thought he was going to go around, which probably wouldn’t have mattered, but he did make a helluva move there splitting horses…If she comes out of the race good and she really wants to go, then maybe we go in the American Oaks (Grade I, 1 ¼ miles on turf May 30).”The second wagering choice in a field of nine, Spanish Queen, who is out of the Unusual Heat mare Spanish Bunny, paid $8.00, $4.60 and $3.80. Owned by her breeders, Jack Nakkashian, Harry Bederian and Harout Kamberian, she picked up $120,000 for the win, boosting her earnings to $183,600.“She’s done everything well and she even seemed like she was a step better than her last race,” said Blanc. “Ninety percent of the horses wouldn’t have gone through that hole, but she didn’t chicken out on me. She’s got a big heart and I was able to maneuver her…She’s professional, she loves racing, even when she started working. She’s getting better and better.”A three-time minor stakes winner, longshot Sharla Rae sat mid-pack to the far turn under Drayden Van Dyke and mounted a sustained rally through the drive to overtake pacesetter Spirit of Xian a sixteenth out, finishing second by 2 ¾ lengths. The longest shot in the field at 48-1, Sharla Rae paid $31.00 and $16.00.Ridden by Joe Talamo, Spirit of Xian broke from the eight post and easily cleared the field going into the far turn and continued to show the way until overtaken by the winner a furlong out.
